The Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) organizes its 11th Scientific Conference in Western Indian Ocean region, which will be held from 1st to 6th of July 2019, in Mauritius. The theme of the Conference is: People, Coasts and Oceans: Opportunities for a Changing Future. 

The Symposium will bring together policy makers, experts, academia, researchers, users, stakeholders and students to share knowledge, experience and solutions to the existing challenges in coastal and marine environment in the Western Indian Ocean Region. The symposium also calls for video, art, photo and WIOMSA alumni competitions. The results of these competitions will be exhibited during the 11th WOIMSA Symposium.

The Global Monitoring for Environment and Africa (GMES and Africa), 30 million Euro Programme, financed by the European Union and the African Union Commission, is delivering both water and natural resources services and marine and coastal areas services. The GMES and Africa is operating through 13 consortia covering 45 African countries and 123 institutions. In the Western Indian Ocean Region, GMES and Africa is delivering marine and coastal areas services through specialized consortia led by the Mauritius Oceanography Institute (MOI) and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). During the Scientific conference GMES and Africa experts will discuss the role of Earth Observation for managing marine and coastal resources in the Western Indian Ocean region in Africa.

The Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA), was established as a regional, non-profit, membership organization in 1993 and registered in Zanzibar, Tanzania in 1994 as a non-governmental organization. The organization is dedicated to promoting the educational, scientific and technological development of all aspects of marine sciences throughout the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region. The WIO region consisting of 10 countries: Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, Comoros, Madagascar, Seychelles, Mauritius, Réunion (France), with a view toward sustaining the use and conservation of its marine resources. WIOMSA has a particular interest in linking the knowledge that emerges from research to the management and governance issues that affect marine and coastal ecosystems in the region.
