The Association has accused Shaanxi mining company of deliberately blasting with poisonous chemicals leading to the deaths
A group calling itself the Concerned Youth of Talensi, is demanding compensation for relatives of sixteen miners who lost their lives after they were trapped in a mining pit in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region.

The Association has accused Shaanxi mining company of deliberately blasting with poisonous chemicals leading to the deaths.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, Spokesperson for the youth, Bismark Zumah, insisted that Shaanxi must compensate families of the deceased.

This call comes in spite of the fact that the company has not been found culpable by authorities for the incident.

“Looking at the number of people who have died as a result of this explosion, some of them have dependents; some of them have wives and children, and now that they are no more, who will take care of them? So we are demanding adequate compensation that will be able to take care of the families that they have left behind.”

“Had it not been Shaanxi doing this illegal blasting, these people would not have lost their lives. The company itself has not been insured. We cannot live in Ghana and continue to allow this illegality to happen on our land. We demand their immediate departure from our land. We can no longer be with them,” Mr. Zumah complained.

The accident occurred on Wednesday near a Shaanxi mining site, although the company has distanced itself from the incident, blaming it on one Kwasi Bantama, a supposed illegal miner.

The Shaanxi Mining Company and the supposed illegal miner have all been ordered by the Minerals Commission to halt operations at Gbani following the deaths to allow for investigations.

Eight persons have been arrested, including Kwasi Bantama in connection with the incident.

Five of the arrested persons were workers of the Shaanxi Mining Company, according to DCOP Paul Ayertey, the Deputy Upper East Police Commander, who spoke on Eyewitness News.

This is the second of such suspensions following an incident in 2017 that claimed 7 lives.

The bodies of the 16 miners who lost their lives in the explosion have been released to their families for burial.

Bolgatanga Regional Hospital’s Medical Director, Dr. Patrick Atobrah, said the other injured miners on admission are responding to treatment.
