A middle-aged woman is set to appear before the Nsuta Circuit Court in the Ashanti Region for allegedly assaulting a police officer stationed at the Asante Mampong Branch of GN Bank.

The incident is said to have happened last Wednesday when the woman protested over her inability to access her funds from the bank, which appears to be faced with liquidity challenges.

According to the Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of Ghana Police Service, Corporal Prince Dogbatse, the police officer was invited to maintain order at the bank after the woman insisted on withdrawing her money before leaving the banking hall.

According to the Police PRO, the woman became violent and assaulted the police officer who acted “professionally” in an attempt to calm the situation.

The police officer, who is yet to be named, subsequently arrested the woman and formally lodged a complaint at the police station.

The accused was processed for court, but she failed to make an appearance in court for the first hearing.

“We have a case of assault on a public officer within the Mampong Police Division. This happened when a customer of GN Bank out of frustration by the bank resulted to misbehavior in the banking hall.

Similar to what happened at Midland, a police officer was called in to come and maintain order. This lady upon seeing the police officer resorted to insults and all manner of misbehavior. She ended up assaulting the police man and the officer who was very professional took the lady to the police station and a formal complaint was made. This case has been put before the Nsuta Circuit court and it is ongoing.”

The case since been adjourned to December 6, 2018.

Meanwhile, Corporal Prince Dogbatse has urged the public to consider the police as “friends” and treat them with “utmost civility.”

“The Police is expected to be the friend of the public, and so these attacks are rather unacceptable and unwarranted. We would have had a different story if the officer had not been professional in dealing with the situation. The public must also treat police officers with utmost civility.”

Officer assaults customer of Midland Savings and Loans
There was a nationwide uproar in July 2018, when a police officer stationed at the East Legon branch of Midland Savings and Loans, physically assaulted a woman who insisted that she would not leave the bank premises until her funds were released to her despite claims by the company’s staff that they were unable to release the funds due to challenges with their system.

The Police officer, who was called in to get the woman out of the premises severely battered the woman.

The officer was sanctioned with the woman receiving compensation packages from the bank, various corporate organizations and many other philanthropists in the country.
